This technique is perfect for a base pattern (like the gorgeous blanket above) or as an added detail to another project (like the hat below).
While you can do the flowers in a single color, they really pop if you use at least two colors per flower (one for the center and one for the petals). If you're feeling extra creative, try creating several different colored flowers in a row.
There are a few different styles of flowers, though the most popular pattern has a center and several petals on the end. In the image below, the petals surround an empty space, which negates the need for a second color yarn. This works particularly well as a border.
To create the flowers, you'll start in the middle and work your way out. To begin, create a slip knot and chain four. Insert your hook into the first chain, yarn over and pull through both loops. Chain one and add 12 single crochets into the center of the circle you've created.
Insert your hook into the first chain, yarn over and pull through the loops to secure the stitch. This is your center. You can snip here.
To start the petals, insert the hook between a double crochet, grab your new yarn, pull it through and tie it off. Hold your loose ends close to the work as you crochet to work the tails into work as you go.
Insert hook into same chain space, yarn over and pull through. Chain three, yarn over, insert hook back into same space. Yarn over and pull through. Make sure you pull tight, so the stitches are long.
Yarn over, insert into the same chain. Yarn over, pull through and pull up. You should have four loops on your hook. Yarn over and insert hook into the next space. Repeat the above steps until you have three stitches. Pull through all of your stitches. Chain two. This is your first petal.
Single crochet in the next stitch and chain three. Start your next petal here. Follow this pattern all the way around.
Once you have created several of these flowers, you can attach them to most any project. Try varying the sizes for different projects for more contrast.
